Goals that Won’t Die on You

Want a couple of simple hints that could help you inject real long-staying power into your projects and goals?

Hint 1

Have a moveable goal. Often I see people achieve their long-held objective, but soon afterward, all forward progress stops. Example – right up the street are two different coffee shops that closed very soon after they opened. My educated guess is that their goal was something like, “I open my own coffee shop, I open my own coffee shop.”

Knowledge Leaps From Mind to Mind

Got a nice, newsy email from long-time friend and charter member Russ the other day. In it he mentioned the idea of implanting new knowledge into the brain as in the film “The Matrix.”

Here’s a suggesting for future articles: I’m REALLY CURIOUS about this new concept of ‘downloading’ intelligence and then ‘uploading’ it again into a new body of our choosing. With all the advances in technology, I’m convinced that this is going to be a reality sometime within this century! I’m hoping it will be within the next 37 years – before I hit 100! Yeah… sign me up for that!

Sucker Promises

I’ve got a pet peeve. And that’s when somebody tries to sell me something which they claim will change my life. The price will be surprisingly low, but despite this, they vow that their system / club / product / seminar will produce results so automatically that I’ll have to put forth little to no effort to reap these miraculous results.

They often state that their system / club / product / seminar will provide results so quickly that I won’t

The Letter but Not the Spirit

So many purists who know the letter but not the spirit of what they’re trying to talk about … oh my my my

People who follow the law (and maybe some whom the law is following) talk about “the letter of the law versus the spirit of the law.”

How to Start DOing

I expect some readers won’t like this one. At least, I HOPE they don’t. Because it’s my intention to get under your skin and irritate the hell out of you. Irritate you enough to stand up on your hind legs and CHANGE SOMETHING. NOW.

You should also be aware that in this article, I’m not talking to you; I’m talking to YOU. The inner you who knows how to actually get things done.

If you’re still reading, it means that you and YOU are in agreement on this.

The Option of Low-Key Greatness

Successes are the side effects, not the goals of living.

Coaches, lecturers and self-help experts spend a lot of time telling you how to be greater, achieve more, improve your self-worth. I admit I’ve done the same thing in the past, and I’ll probably do it again, when it seems appropriate.

But just for now, just for the next two or three minutes, let’s set aside our to-do lists, our goal sheets and our dream boards. Let’s not talk about goals or achievement at all. No affirmations, no law of attraction stuff, no power-packed visualizations.

A Surer Way to Hit Your Goals

About a century and a half ago, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote that people would rather look to others for their motivation. And that was at a time we nostalgically consider America’s “rugged individualist” phase. Wonder what he’d say now.

Human nature being what it is, I’d guess that nothing much has changed since the mid-eighteen-hundreds.

Back then they had a well established apprenticeship system under

Coasting Won’t Get Us There

Success is a peak experience. Nobody just drifts up a mountain

Behind every person who makes a success of something, you’ll find a long, rugged trail of effort and persistence. Somehow the world knows. It can tell who’s paid their dues and who’s just coasted along, putting in the time but not the blood, sweat and grit.

Of course, we sometimes see an exception, a person who rides in on a connection, a coat-tail or a coincidence. But if they didn’t really earn it, their flash across the sky is brief and soon forgotten. Call them what you wish, one-hit-wonders, one-movie duds, or one-sale-burnouts, they don’t know what they did, so it’s a non-repeatable thing.

Stepping into the Realm of Uncertainty

Living is a do-it-yourself project. At birth we were given our life, and in the course of that life, we’ve encountered circumstances, people, events.

What we make of them – and of ourselves – has been left entirely up to us. But there are certain people and certain organizations who see what we’re doing and may not like the direction we’re headed in. Some of them might even feel they have the right to step in and direct our life for us.
